Bronwyn Holloway-Smith is a Wellington-based artist who works in a wide-range of media, specialising in cross-platform, trans-disciplinary installation practice.
Her work often examines and engages with new technologies and the futuristic ideals and challenges these inventions present, with a recent focus on internet culture, 3-dimensional printing, open source art, and space colonisation. Her work has been shown internationally as well as throughout New Zealand, and she has works held in private and public collections including the Wallace Trust, the Wellington City Council, and Massey University.
Recent career highlights include: inclusion in “The Obstinate Object” – a major survey of contemporary NZ Sculpture at City Gallery Wellington in 2012; being commissioned by AUT’s CoLab research centre to develop a video work for Air New Zealand’s Inflight Entertainment programme (screened on all international flights in early 2013); being commissioned by the acclaimed public art group “Letting Space” to create Pioneer City a major installation in downtown Wellington in 2012; and being selected as one of the first artists to create a billboard artwork for Wellington City Council’s Ghuznee St Art Billboard series.
Holloway-Smith has won the bi-annual New Zealand Open Source Arts Award 2 years running: once in 2010 for Ghosts In The Form Of Gifts and again in 2012 for Whisper Down The Lane.
She has served the NZ arts sector in several roles, including sitting on the Enjoy Public Art Gallery Trust from 2008-2012; working as Project Coordinator for the widely acclaimed One Day Sculpture public art series in 2008-2009; and her current role: Teaching Learning Projects Advisor at Massey University College of Creative Arts.
In 2008 she co-founded – and is current Director of – the Creative Freedom Foundation: a not-for-profit New Zealand artist’s copyright advocacy group. Being spokesperson for the 2009 CFF-led “internet blackout” online public protest that gained significant media attention in NZ and overseas, paving the way for high-profile 2012 SOPA/PIPA blackout protests in the USA. Subsequently earning a place on the NZ National Business Review’s 2009 list of the “25 Most Powerful People In Technology”.
She holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts (First Class Honours) from Massey University and is currently studying copyright at Harvard University through the online education network EdX.
