14 Jan 2014 - Contacted by NS asking if I have any photos of a mural on the inside of the Takapuna cable station, where the Takapuna end of the Southern Cross Cable surfaces.
23 Mar 2014 - Contact Southern Cross Cables asking for permission to access the cable station to photograph the mural. Am forwarded to MM, cable station manager.
24 Mar 2014 - MM responds “There is no longer a mural at the cable station, many years ago there was a ceramic mural which was on the entrance wall at the Compac cable station which is on the same site. This mural started to deteriorate & fall apart so it was removed.”
24 Mar 2014 - Respond to MM asking if there are any photographs or other documentation of the mural.
27 Mar 2014 - MM replies saying he will try to locate some info on the mural, but suspects there are not many people around that would know about it or have photos.
25 Mar 2014 - Relay news to NS who says “There are images of it in the New Zealand National Archives, I think…”
31 Mar 2014 - Locate small colour photograph of mural at Archives NZ. Remarkable ceramic tile mural of Maui fishing up North Island by E. Mervyn Taylor. Take reference photos.
31 Mar 2014 - Contact MM saying I’ve found image of the mural. Enquire “what happened to the remnants of the mural when it was removed, or can you point me towards someone else who might?”
1 Apr 2014 - MM responds “I have tracked down the boxes of tiles which make up the mural…” Conversation begins about restoring and reinstalling the mural.
